Lonar Meteoritic Impact Crater


Global Position:

Latitude: N19° 58' Longitude: E76° 31'


Location:

Situated in Lonar Town in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra state, India. About 550 km from Mumbai(Airport), 160 km from Aurangabad(Airport) and 140 km from Buldhana. The nearest railway station is Jalna on Manmad-Nanded Section of South Central Railway of India. It is about 4 1/2 hours drive southeast of the famous Ajanta Caves.


Dimensions:

Diameter: About 6,000 ft (1.82 km)
Depth: About 175 metres in depth.


Once thought to be of Volcanic Crater now recognized as an Meteoritic Impact Crater created due to the hypervelocitic impact of either a comet or mounding the crater.
